Applications call for ANFASA Grant Scheme Scheme for Authors 2020
ANFASA, the Academic and Non-Fiction Authors’ Association of South Africa, announces the next round of the grant scheme to benefit authors of scholarly and general non-fiction works. Scholarly works are normally based on research and cover a wide range of disciplines in the humanities, social sciences, and arts. The AGSA scheme encourages young researchers, in particular, to communicate through the written word and to build their academic careers through the writing of scholarly monographs. Grants are reserved for books rather than articles, although a compilation of essays would be eligible.

Richell Prize for Emerging Writers.
The Prize is once again open to unpublished writers of adult fiction and adult narrative non-fiction. Writers do not need to have a full manuscript at the time of submission, though they must intend to complete one. The Prize will be judged on the first three chapters of the submitted work, along with a synopsis outlining the direction of the proposed work and detail about how the author’s writing career would benefit from winning the Prize.
The winner will receive $10,000 in prize money, to be donated by Hachette Australia, and a year’s mentoring with one of Hachette Australia’s publishers. Hachette Australia will work with the winning writer to develop their manuscript with first option to consider the finished work, and the shortlisted entries, for publication.

Juncture Fellowship Program for Literary Critics

The JUNCTURE fellowship program is a rare opportunity for professional critics to extend their practice. We know that most mid-career and established critics juggle many writing and teaching gigs. This precarity makes it difficult to plan and research detailed critical work. In addition to a year-long roster of paid commissions, the SRB will provide editorial support from the journal’s editorial team, our board and broader network.
We will offer JUNCTURE fellowships in July 2020 and July 2021. In early 2022 we will publish an anthology of the finest work to emerge from this project.

Applications are open for the Miles Morland Foundation (MMF) Writing Scholarship 2020. The Miles Morland Foundation’s main aim is to support entities in Africa which enable Africans to get their voices heard. It is particularly interested in supporting African writing and African literature.
It can be difficult for writers, before they become established, to write while simultaneously earning a living. To help meet this need the MMF annually awards a small number of Morland Writing Scholarships, with the aim being to allow each Scholar the time to produce the first draft of a completed book.

The purpose of the AIAC Fellowship is to support the production of original work and new knowledge on Africa-related topics that are under-recognized and under-covered in traditional media, new media, and other public forums. It particularly seeks to amplify voices and perspectives from the left that address the major political, social, and economic issues affecting Africans in ways that are original, accessible, and engaging to a variety of audiences.
Fellows will be writers and/or other cultural/intellectual producers who can contribute meaningfully to transforming and expanding knowledge about Africa and the diaspora. Each fellow will receive a grant of up to US$3,000 to create original work on a topic of their choice for AIAC over a 9-month period.

The Third Coast International Audio Festival invites entries for the Richard H. Driehaus Foundation Competition in 2020.
The TC/RHDF Competition awards the best narrative audio stories produced across borders and languages, inviting producers from across the world to enter their best work from the past few years. At Third Coast, the Competition is an engine for our programming and community-building, and a snapshot of the world in audio. Since 2001, the Competition has celebrated masterful, experimental, groundbreaking, and radical works in audio storytelling, and has awarded over $300,000 in cash prizes to many of the most innovative makers of the past two decades.

The Royal Commonwealth Society is pleased to announce that The Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition 2020 was launched in Christchurch, New Zealand by the Society’s Vice-Patron HRH The Duchess of Cornwall on the theme ‘Climate Action and the Commonwealth’.
Building upon the 2019 theme of A Connected Commonwealth, this year’s topics draw on the increasing youth movement across the Commonwealth and the ongoing climate crisis. Young people are called upon to consider their position and power in bringing about change, and how the Commonwealth can be used as a tool for positive action.
Worth of Award
- Prizes have traditionally been awarded only to the first prize winners in the Senior and Junior categories and also vary year by year.
