TVO POETRY SLAM UPDATE

Do you know what a poetry slam is? A poetry slam is a live presentation of spoken words by poets within a circle.
We had our poetry slam on the sixth day of June this very year. Even though the pandemic wouldn’t grant us the privilege of having a gathering, it couldn’t stop us from having a good time.

The birthing of magic was so amazing and spontaneous that I swore not to enjoy it alone. So dear reader, here is the magic we birthed:

Zoltan: We came out of the sea,
The sun adorning our skins

Blessings: We rose above its tide,
We took it for our ride.

Ogooluwa: Strapped to our chest were questions about our history

Tobi: We never saw the divide,
Until it divided us completely.

Murewa: Then it dawned that the force of our history within us was greater than the forces of the waves.

Peace: Brown against cream,
Yellow against white.

Ogooluwa: Our dream taking flight,
Making us fellows of knights without armours.

Blessings: The past we read about, the present we see and the future of our dreams, all meet at this crossroad.

Peace: History demands bravery,
The present screams cowardice.

Blessings: But the future seeks rebels.

Victoria: Our heart holding dreams,
Our destinies look useless like rags.

Murewa: In all history shows us that we do not learn from history,

Blessings: Rather, we create our own story.

Now, let’s have it as a whole

We came out of the sea,
The sun adorning our skin,
We rose above its tide,
We took it for our ride,
Strapped to our chest were questions about our history,
We never saw the divide,
Until it divided us completely,
Then it dawned on us that the force of our history within us was greater than the forces of the waves.
Brown against cream,
Yellow against white,
Our dreams taking flight making us fellows of knights without flight.
The past we read about, the present we see and the future of our dreams, all meet at this crossroad.
History demands bravery,
The present screams cowardice,
But the future seeks rebels
Our hearts holding our dreams,
Our destinies seem useless as rags.
In all, history shows us that we do not learn from history,
Rather we create our own story.

Oh, you wished you were a participant?
Of course you do. Watch out for the next one.
And another thing, what suitable title would you give to this poem?
Drop your answers in the comment section.
We look forward to seeing you at the next poetry slam!
